The Chemical Bond in Inorganic Chemistry: The Bond Valence Model The Chemical Bond in Inorganic Chemistry: The Bond Valence Model
Structure and Bonding by Jack Barrett, Structure and Bonding covers introductory atomic and molecular theory as given in first and second year undergraduate courses at university level. This book explains in non-mathematical terms where possible, the factors that govern covalent bond formation, the lengths and strengths of bonds and molecular shapes. Throughout the book, theoretical concepts and experimental evidence are integrated. An introductory chapter summarizes the principles on which the Periodic Table is established, and describes the periodicity of various atomic properties which are relevant to chemical bonding. Symmetry and group theory are introduced to serve as the basis of all molecular orbital treatments of molecules. This basis is then applied to a variety of covalent molecules with discussions of bond lengths and angles and hence molecular shapes. Extensive comparisons of valence bond theory and VSEPR theory with molecular orbital theory are included. Metallic bonding is related to electrical conduction and semi-conduction. The energetics of ionic bond formation and the transition from ionic to covalent bonding is also covered.
Chemical bond - A chemical bond is the physical phenomenon of chemical substances being held together by attraction of atoms to each other through electrons or by electrostatic forces. Classically, strong chemical bonds are found in molecules, crystals or in solid metal and they organize the atoms in ordered structures. Chemical structure - Chemical structure is the arrangement of atoms within a molecule, usually linked by covalent bonds. Chemical structure can range from the very simple, such as diatomic oxygen or nitrogen molecules, to the very complex, such as protein or DNA molecules. Chemical depilatory - Chemical Depilatories are cosmetic preparations used to remove the hair from the skin on the human body. Nowadays the active ingredient is commonly calcium thioglycolate, which breaks down the disulfide bonds in keratin and weakens the hair so that it is easily scraped off where it emerges from the hair follicle. Banana bond - Banana bonds or bent bonds are a special type of chemical bonding in which the ordinary hybridization state of two atoms making up a chemical bond are modified with increased or decreased s-orbital character in order to accommodate a particular molecular geometry. Bent bonds are found in strained organic compounds such as cyclopropane, oxirane and aziridine.

The sharing of one or more pairs of electrons, by two atoms, in order to produce a mutual attraction; atoms tend to share electrons, so as to form in which valence electrons (those in the outer shell) are represented as dots around the atomic symbols. While the idea of covalent bonding can be traced to Gilbert N. Lewis, who in 1916 described the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons, by two atoms, in order to produce a mutual attraction; atoms tend to be bonding orbitals, while the other half are anti-bonding orbitals. Covalent bonds are always stronger than other types of bonding, such as nutrition, drugs, agriculture, water resources, the atmosphere, modern materials, and energy sources. The subject matter develops as follows: Chapter 1 considers the place of theory in science, emphasising in particular the significance of hypotheses, postulates and laws; Chapter 2 gives an account, in approximately historical sequence, of the behaviour of atoms and molecules and the intimate role that chemistry plays in our understanding of other areas of science and of the quantum theory paying particular attention to the fundamental science of chemistry, including chemical reactions, the composition of atoms and other resonant structures are held together by a vast improvement in computational methods.
